Canutillo High School FFA's
AG Field Day A Big Success
February 2010 |
|
|
Elementary school students in the Canutillo district were thrilled to learn about agriculture and
experience fun physical activities during Ag Field Day, held recently at Canutillo High School (CHS).
The FFA Chapter at CHS, in connection with National FFA Week, planned the full day of activities in
hopes of increasing agriculture awareness to elementary students in the Canutillo Independent
School District.
Students from each elementary school in the district were transported by school bus to the Ag Field
Day, held on the soccer field at CHS. According to FFA students, who planned the event, it was a
day in which CISD elementary students were able to experience agriculture first hand.
The event provided students the chance to see live demonstrations with animals and learn about
agriculture through interactive displays. Students had the opportunity to view how the dairy industry
works through a mobile dairy; see goats and llamas through the live animal petting zoo; witness the
shoeing of horses; and experienced hands-on learning activities through the mobile learning barn.

Canutillo High School is celebrating its annual Homecoming week under the theme “A Thriller of
a Homecoming”. Activities began on Tuesday with the school’s yearly Hall Decorating contest
and will continue through Saturday for the school dance on Halloween evening.
Judging for the Hall Decorating contest took place on Wednesday morning, where the Seniors

fourth place.
Festivities continued on Wednesday afternoon, where students participated in the annual

through downtown Canutillo, ending at Gallegos Park.
CHS students and faculty gathered for a campus-wide pep rally on Thursday morning at the
Coach Julius & Irene Lowenberg Eagles Stadium, where the Outstanding Ex for 2009 was

CHS Opens Student-run Café
Students serve up lunch for faculty at 'CHEFS' Café; Program delivers real-life kitchen experience
October 12, 2009

Canutillo, TX (October 12, 2009) -- Canutillo High School has officially opened its student-run
cafe called “Chefs”. The grand opening was held Thursday, October 8 in the school’s Culinary
Arts classroom and will operate every Thursday to serve lunch for school officials and faculty.
Under the direction of Chef Charlie Simpson, students have transformed the classroom into a
sit-down café fully equipped with an assembly line for food production.
"I want to give the students a real-world understanding of what really goes on in a kitchen-- the
preparation involved, the ordering, inventory, and making money for the program," said Chef
Simpson. Some of the dishes students are serving up include- Chicken Chipotle on a Ciabatta,
and Tortilla Soup.
The idea behind the student-run café is to give CHS students the skills necessary to obtain a
job in the culinary arts field. “The students who take the program seriously and want to advance
in the industry will now be better prepared before they leave because of the hands-on practice
they are getting,” explains Chef Simpson.
Canutillo ISD began its Culinary Arts program last year. Chef Simpson says it was the students
who wanted to take the program a step further by opening the café. Run like a real restaurant,
the students are responsible for the front of the house, as well as the kitchen operations. It’s
not just about cooking. Through the program, students also get to understand the business
aspect of operating a restaurant, so that it is profitable. “We wanted to make it as real as we
could,” says Simpson. [Download Press Release] |
